A Review of Fairy Tail

Honestly, when I came across Fairy Tail, I started watching it just out of curiosity because I felt like it would be one of those enjoyable, feel-good anime series. I thought it would be nothing much, just a light-hearted show to watch and pass my time. However, I soon came to realise that it is so much more than that.

The anime pretty much begins with your typical, clichéd introduction to a fantasy series. In the mystical land of Fiore, where magic is extremely common in everyday life and mages roam the streets and reside just like normal humans, there exist multiple magic guilds. These guilds recruit and provide shelter to mages with similar views. Mages from the same guild act together, almost like a family and take on all kinds of job requests.

The anime begins its character introductions by showing a young female mage, Lucy Heartfilia, who’s on her way to collect celestial keys (used to summon celestial spirits) and wants to join one of the most prestigious guilds in Fiore: Fairy Tail, and hence, the name of the anime. After a series of unplanned events, she ends up crossing paths with Natsu Dragneel and his partner Happy; who are from Fairy Tail. They invite her to join their guild. Upon reaching the guild, Lucy meets other amazing wizards like Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet who soon join her along with Natsu and they all then plan to take on job requests together, as a group. This marks the beginning of all the comedy and action-packed adventures in the anime. There are a wide range of characters who get introduced as the series progresses into its plot. Something that I find extremely intriguing is the way this anime explores different kind of powers that these numerous wizards have. Celestial magic, dragon slayer magic, Requip magic and whatnot! I’m not gonna mention more since it’ll definitely spoil the fun. Countless explosive battles and some shocking revelations about the characters and the events taking place in the series are some of my favourite things about it.

This anime is definitely an easy-to-follow series for all of you beginners out there! I say this because the plot starts off as plain and simple and gradually, traverses complicated paths. It is loaded with goofy, comical, adventurous and even heart-wrenching scenes.

There are a lot of things to look forward to in this anime; fights with dark guilds (not approved by the “magic council” and are treated as criminal organisations), the grand magic games where many guilds participate to compete against one another and much more!
There are, however, some things that I didn’t exactly find to be that great about this show. Something that I think the series could’ve delved into are the details in battles and some events. At times, you would begin to think that the “villains” in the series can easily overpower the protagonists, but in some of those battles, in some way, shape or form, there will be this unexplained burst of power from the protagonists which will help them to win the fight. Basically, some battles defy logic and so do some of the events’ explanations.

Overall, I would recommend this to all of you out there who appreciate fun battles, comedy and a whole rollercoaster of emotions in a series.
